Special constables honoured

Eight new volunteer officers will be helping keep the streets of Greenwich safe and are now patrolling the borough alongside full-time police officers.
The Council hosted a swearing-in ceremony for the newly-graduated Special Constables at the Town Hall. It was conducted by Greenwich Magistrate, Mr Roy Martin.

Also present to congratulate the graduates were:

  • Mayor of Greenwich Cllr Harpinder Singh
  • Greenwich Borough Commander Chief Supt Peter Lowton
  • Insp. Tony Bigwood, representing the Chief Officer of the Metropolitan Special Constabulary.
Most of the new officers are borough residents and all specifically requested to be able to carry out their duties within the borough of Greenwich.

Keeping the borough safer

Cllr Singh said, "I congratulate these officers on their achievements, and on behalf of the whole Greenwich community I thank them for the role they are undertaking in helping to make ours a safer borough.

"In Greenwich we are fortunate in that our levels of crime are relatively low – but the challenge of making our streets and our neighbourhoods safe is one that remains with us. Both the Council and the Police are wholeheartedly committed to meeting that challenge, and this group of new volunteers will enjoy the full support of the Council and the local community."

Chief Supt Lowton added, "Special Constables play a vital role alongside full-time officers, and the fact that these officers give of their time in a completely voluntary capacity is something that deserves nothing but credit."
