Jo Brand and the Mayor at the opening
Need a bit of peace and quiet?
Take a trip to Charlton House and enjoy the serenity of the new Peace Garden - formerly known as the rose garden.
The garden was officially opened on 6 July by popular TV comedienne Jo Brand and the Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Harpinder Singh.
It is composed of a variety of trees and plants with a beautiful rose display. There are also specially designed benches (contributed by Amnesty International) alongside a Japanese peace pole and a sculpture.
The sculpture - called The Portage - shows a woman carrying a large boat-shaped object. It is meant to represent the ability that people have to shape their own destiny by using their strength to overcome any bad situation.
Amnesty International campaign
The Peace Garden project follows on from Amnesty International’s recent Stop Domestic Violence Against Women campaign. The campaign found that those having domestic problems hugely benefited from having a place where they could go to escape their day-to-day troubles.
Since then, Amnesty International has been working in partnership with the Council to create a place in the borough where residents can go and enjoy tranquil surroundings.

An invaluable place for residents
Councillor Harpinder Singh, Mayor of Greenwich, said:
"Creating this new garden has involved a great deal of support from the local community and it’s been very pleasing to see what we’re able to achieve when everyone pulls their efforts together.
"We all get those times in our day-to-day lives when we feel the need to get away from it all, and I think this new garden is going to be an invaluable place for our residents to go to when they feel this way."
