Councillor Sidhu tries out a bin in Woolwich
You can now recycle ‘on the go’ in Greenwich as new street litter bins are being installed across the borough. The new bins have two compartments - one for recyclable items and the other for general waste.
What can I recycle?
You recycle items such as:
- glass
- plastic
- cans
- paper
- cardboard.
Where are the bins?
Bins have already been installed in Woolwich and Eltham town centres. A total of 125 are planned for key locations across the borough to replace the old-style litterbins.
What will happen to the recyclable items?
Recycling collected from the new bins will be processed at the Greenwich Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) based in Thamesmead.
Greenwich has successfully exceeded its 18% government recycling target for 2005/06 by 3% and the new bins will help reinforce the recycling message.

Creating a cleaner, greener environment
Councillor Rajwant Sidhu, Cabinet Member for Greener Greenwich, said: "These new bins are user friendly and we hope everyone will use them because recycling is so important.
"Up until now, all sorts of recyclable items have been thrown away in the old style litter bin, so the new bins are a huge improvement.
"Every item recycled alleviates pressure on landfill sites and helps us to create a greener, cleaner environment for us all to enjoy."
Want to recycle at home?
If you are a Greenwich resident and are not already participating in the kerbside recycling scheme, you can join by calling 020 8921 4661.
