Young people! Come along to a FREE sports taster day this Thursday, 27 July, to mark the six-year countdown to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.
What's going on?
There are two sessions, one for children aged 11 and under and one for 12 to 16-year-olds.
Children aged 11 and under
You are invited to Greenwich Park from 10am-12 noon to take part in sessions including football and gymnastics.
Time: 10am to 12noon
12 to 16-year-olds
Come and enjoy basketball sessions at the David Beckham Academy, next to The O2 at Greenwich Peninsula.
Time: 2pm to 4pm.
Are you a star of the future?
The day of celebrations will showcase the work we are doing to nurture the borough's sporting stars of the future.
We also want to encourage you to look after your health by getting active in sport, whatever your level of ability.
Spotlighting the Olympics
The events will also spotlight two of the three main Olympic venues in the borough:
- The O2 (formerly the Dome) will host basketball and gymnastics
- Greenwich Park will host equestrian activities
- Woolwich Barracks will host the shooting events.
Gymnastics and badminton events will take place in a temporary arena that will be built next to The O2

Good news for cyclists too!
A new eight-mile (12.8 km) cycle route linking the three venues is also being launched as part of Thursday’s countdown celebrations. It will be backed by a free full-colour map published by the Council.
The launch will feature teams of cyclists 'Carrying the Torch' along the route and returning to the Barracks for a flag-raising ceremony before an invited audience.
