Teams of cyclists will create a human link between three of London’s Olympic venues tonight -Thursday 27 July.
It's all part of Greenwich's celebrations to mark the six-year countdown to the opening of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games on 27 July 2012.
New cycle route
This will also see the launch of a new ‘Ride the Games’ cycle route. The eight-mile (12.8 km) route links Greenwich’s three main Olympic venues:
- Royal Artillery Barracks
- Greenwich Park
- The O2 (formerly the Dome).
It also takes in many other features of the borough’s heritage, riverfront and open spaces along the way. A full-colour guide to the route will be available soon.
The launch will include teams of riders from the army cadets and local police. They will ride the route carrying ‘torches’ on special flags that will be raised in a ceremony at the Woolwich Barracks.
Investment in new facilities
Council Leader, Chris Roberts said, "There has rightly been a great deal of attention on the investment in new facilities and infrastructure that the 2012 London Games will attract for London, and the legacy that will be created for Londoners.
"In Greenwich we want to celebrate the fact that our Olympic venues – Greenwich Park, Woolwich Barracks and The O2 – are already here, for all to see.
"We are also kicking off the latest in our series of events aimed at using the forthcoming London Games to inspire people of all ages to take part in sport and physical activity. As these events grow in scale, we will use them as a springboard to increase participation in sport still further over the next six years."
The day of celebrations will also feature free taster sessions in a range of sports for young people.
