Woolwich Winter Wonderland kicks off festive season

Two girls carrying lanterns
Thousands of people flocked to Woolwich Town Centre on Saturday as Woolwich Winter Wonderland made a welcome return to the borough.
The afternoon kicked off a month-long series of weekend events in the lead up to Christmas.

The fun started at 1pm with activities including:

  • live entertainment from a stage in Woolwich Town Centre
  • the ever-popular lantern procession
  • live reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh.

Street sport festival

Over at the Royal Arsenal Gardens, a street sport festival helped introduce 11-19 year olds to alternative ways of staying healthy and keeping physically active.

The festival featured a variety of free activities such as:

  • climbing
  • skateboarding
  • BMX riding
  • street dancing
  • dj-ing.

Have your say

A Talk Café gave residents the opportunity to talk to their local councillors over a cup of tea and find out about council services and plans.

Specially constructed discussion walls allowed participants to record their views on what they thought of the council.

More to come

More activities are set to take place over the following three Saturdays on December 9, 16 and 23. Activities will include Christmas decoration making alongside a selection of street entertainment from some of Europe’s leading street performers. Acts will include:

  • Gandini Juggling Project
  • Cirque Bijou complete with stunning fire dancers
  • Splott Brothers Yuletide Café
  • London premiere of The Star Bubble.

Shop 'til you drop

Don't forget about your shopping. Woolwich Town Centre offers a convenient alternative to the big shopping centres. A fine selection of stores give you the opportunity to pick up Christmas presents without the hassle of having to venture too far afield.

Getting in the Christmas mood

Council Leader, Chris Roberts, said, "It was very pleasing to see so many people enjoying the Woolwich Winter Wonderland event on Saturday.

"It is just one of many festive highlights taking place in the borough over the Christmas period. The event not only helps people get in the Christmas mood, but is also a part of the Council’s commitment to supporting businesses in Woolwich Town Centre."
