Pupils at Meridian primary school are celebrating after winning a £5,000 grant to transform their school playground.
This is thanks to a competition run by Woolworths Kids First. Schools were asked to come up with new and innovative ideas for their playground.
Meridian’s designs included proposals for:
- a pond
- a bird feeder and bird-bath
- a log cabin
- sheltered seating
- a floor mosaic
- a range of new shrubs and plants.
Nick Raynsford, MP for Greenwich and Woolwich, presented the year six pupils with their prize this week.
The Friends of Meridian School (FROMS) will be adding funding to the £5,000 grant, and the school is expecting the refurbishment to begin early next year.
Excellent accomplishment
Councillor Jackie Smith, Greenwich Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services, said,
"This is an excellent accomplishment for Meridian primary school. It’s great to see all the hard work that has been put in to this project by staff and pupils being recognised in this way. I know that everyone is really looking forward to playtime next year."
Creative plan
Dave Suttle, headteacher of Meridian Primary School, added,
"We were very pleased to hear we had won the grant. The children were very independent and very proactive in terms of following the brief they were given. They came up with a really creative plan and now, with help from our parents, we are hoping to put it into practice."
