The Mayor with some of Santa's helpers
The streets of Greenwich are now bathed in a festive glow following the switching on of the Christmas lights last Friday.
The Mayor, Councillor Harpinder Singh switched on the Greenwich Christmas Tree lights at the Cutty Sark Gardens just minutes after Santa and his helpers had switched on the Greenwich Market lights.
The switch-on ceremony marked the beginning of the Christmas period and by-standers were treated to a selection of lively seasonal songs courtesy of talented youngsters from the James Wolfe Primary school choir.
A range of festive entertainment also took place throughout the evening along with the opportunity to enjoy free mince pies and mulled wine.
Ice rink
There's more fun ahead as the Greenwich Ice Rink at the Old Royal Naval College has now re-opened for its third year. The rink will be open until Sunday 14 January 2007.
