Greenwich schools praised by Ofsted

Government inspectors have given the seal of approval to three more schools in Greenwich following a series of recent Ofsted inspections.
The schools commended were:

  • Christ Church Primary in Shooters Hill
  • James Wolfe Primary with Centre for the Deaf in Greenwich
  • St Thomas More Roman Catholic Comprehensive in Eltham.
The three schools were acknowledged for having a number of strengths and for progressing well since their last inspections.

Christ Church

Christ Church’s overall effectiveness was seen as outstanding. Particular mention was made of the schools excellent leadership and management qualities and its continual attempt to improve itself even further.

Its pupils have also set exceptionally high standards in national tests and assessments.

Even the one possible negative was turned into a positive. The report pinpointed the absence of some facilities in the school, such as a school hall or sufficient outside play area for the youngest pupils. It highlighted the fact that the school was  aware of the situation and worked hard to overcome the possible disadvantages.

St Thomas More

St Thomas More was also judged to be outstanding in the overall effectiveness category. There were particular mentions for personal development and well being of each child on an academic and personal level.

The students have excellent relationships with their teachers and behave extremely well. This contributes to excellent attendance levels and examination results.

The school's success is also helped by excellent leadership and management at all levels, with the solitary weakness of having a lack of vocational courses at Key Stage 4. The school had already identified this problem and is in the process of finding a solution.

James Wolfe

James Wolfe was judged to have an overall effectiveness level of good. Mentions were made to the good teaching and the good level of performance in all age groups.

The school also contains a centre for deaf children, which has been judged to cater very well for its children and as a result they are all making good progress. Another strength is how well the pupils with a diverse range of backgrounds integrate together.

Hard work is paying off

Councillor Jackie Smith, Cabinet member for Children and Young People’s Services, said, "I am pleased that Ofsted have officially noted the success of our schools. This shows that the hard work of staff and students is definitely paying off.

"Many congratulations to all the schools and I am sure that they will continue the good work and continue to look at ways to progress further."
