A woman has been sentenced to a 40-hour community punishment order after falsely claiming more than £2,500 of benefits.
The 49-year-old, from Lee, appeared at Woolwich Magistrates’ Court on Monday and pleaded guilty of defrauding Greenwich Council’s housing benefit department.
She pleaded guilty to four charges after she gave false information about one of her daughters.
She claimed her eldest daughter was studying at university, but she was really employed by the Greater London Authority.
The defendant was given credit for an early guilty plea, and for her previous good character. As well as the 40-hour Community Punishment Order, she has to pay £100 costs.
Councillor Chris Roberts, leader of the council, said: “This case shows once again how seriously we take benefit fraud.
“People who claim money they are not entitled to are taking money that could be used to help fund frontline services.
“We pursue such cases rigorously, and do our best to make sure that people who try to cheat the system do not get away with it.”
