Making waves in Greenwich

Local swimming clubs have been invited by the Council to help shape the future of swimming in the borough.

Proposals are aimed at strengthening support for top-level competitive swimmers ahead of 2012, while at the same time creating greater opportunities for swimmers of all abilities to use local pools.

Local clubs will have close involvement in the transition to the new arrangements.

The new arrangements will allow for:

  • better use of pool time to allow competitive swimmers to train more frequently
  • greater opportunities to support 'learner' swimmers to go on to swim at the next level, including competitively
  • increased facilities for learn-to-swim schemes and fitness swimming
  • the 'pooling' of coaching expertise across the borough.
Family swimming sessions and women-only sessions will not be affected.

Free swimming for under 16s and over 60s

The Council is contributing just under £70,000 over two years (beginning April 2009) to support the Swim4Free initiative in the borough.

Under this scheme, people aged 16 and under or over 60 get to swim for free at participating swimming pools.

This cross-Government scheme is part of a plan to leave a lasting legacy from London 2012 – giving people up and down the country more opportunities to get active.

Other plans include the introduction of free swimming lessons for the over-60s from May 2009.
