Greenwich Starting Blocks Trust
Starting Blocks bursaries
There are currently six athletes who are benefiting from Starting Blocks funding.
The first two young athletes to receive backing were presented with their awards by Sharron Davies MBE at one of our glittering Greenwich Ambassador events.
They are:
Gemma Gibbons - former British Judo Youth Champion, member of the British World Cup team, and a member of Metro Judo Club
Jason Pippin - ranked in the British top ten among under-18 weightlifters.
Bursaries granted
Another bursary was awarded to Zoe Smith, who is No 1 weightlifter in the Under 18's 53kg class and number two in the British women's ranking – and she's only 13 years old.
Zoe's potential has already been spotted nationally and she was nominated to go with the British Olympic Association 'Class of 2012' as a guest to the Beijing Olympics.
Other bursaries
Awards have also been presented to:
Curtis Griffiths-Parker - British under-17 champion in discus and shot putt in 2007 and a member of Cambridge Harriers athletics club
Jeffrey Lawal-Balogun - ranked fourth in the UK at 100m, fifth at 200m, third in GB U23s at 200m, 2nd in the South of England U23s
Xavier Mohammed - current GB No 1 junior swimmer in five events, 1st in European junior rankings.
