Services for schools

The Greenwich Heritage Centre runs a free educational service for schools based on the National Curriculum.

Illustrated talks

We also offer illustrated talks and handling sessions on a variety of topics, including:

  • Romans
  • Tudors
  • Victorians
  • World War II
  • Local study
  • Egyptian jewellery workshops.
All of these can be tailored to meet the needs of your class. The sessions are held in a new, very pleasant environment. We also offer guided tours of the Centre’s two exhibitions and of the Royal Arsenal site.

Always on offer

  • Brass rubbing – try something different
  • Dress up and draw – costume through the ages
  • Quizzes and word searches based on the Centre’s two exhibitions

Free to Greenwich Schools

There is no charge for schools in Greenwich. For schools outside the borough there is a current charge of £1 per child.

Sources for teachers

We can offer practical help and advice on sources for local aspects of the National Curriculum, for example:

  • Census Returns from 1841
  • Maps from 1700
  • Prints, photographs and postcards from c1860
  • Street Directories from c1900
  • Local Newspapers from 1834
  • Ephemera files on a wide variety of topics
Copies can be made from most of these for use in the classroom, for which there is a small charge.

We welcome visits from teachers and can arrange one-to-one sessions to help your particular project or INSET sessions for groups.

For more information on, or to arrange for, the free educational service, please call 020 8854 2452 or email heritage.centre@greenwich.gov.uk.
