Greenwich Millennium Embroideries

History: Panel depicting the 20th Century
The Millennium Embroideries were begun in 1998 at the former Borough Museum by the Curator, Beverley Burford, to produce embroidered panels depicting the history of the borough from the beginning of the millennium to the year 2000.
Many local women volunteered to spend many hours over a number of years to produce the eight panels.

Exhibition

The Tudor and 20th Century embroidered panels are now on display in the Heritage Centre's Temporary Exhibition Gallery.

The exhibition is possible as funds for the first conservation display case to house two panels have been raised. The panels displayed will be rotated every three months so that all eight will be displayed during the course of the year.

The eight panels represent these periods of our history:

  • Celts and Romans
  • Anglo Saxons and Vikings
  • Medieval
  • Tudor
  • Stuart
  • Georgian
  • Victorian
  • 20th Century.

More display cases needed

For the embroideries to be displayed, they need to be in proper conservation display cases to ensure their protection and preservation.

In 2007 the Friends of Greenwich Millennium Embroideries (FoGME) was set up by the embroiderers to raise money to purchase display cases for the panels.

We now have one display panel. Fundraising continues for display cases for the remaining panels.
