Charlton House Peace Garden

Do you need some peace and quiet? Visit Charlton House and enjoy the serenity of the new Peace Garden - formerly known as the rose garden.

The opening hours of the walled gardens are Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm (or dusk in winter).

A place to escape

The Peace Garden project follows on from Amnesty International’s Stop Domestic Violence Against Women campaign.

The campaign found that those having domestic problems hugely benefited from having a place where they could go to escape their day-to-day troubles.

Local support

The tranquil Peace Garden involved a great deal of support from the local community and is planted with a variety of trees and plants. It has a beautiful rose display and Japanese peace pole.

Amnesty International contributed specially designed benches to sit and relax.

A sculpture called Portage shows a woman carrying a large boat-shaped object. It represents the ability that people have to shape their own destiny by using their strength to overcome any bad situation.

Further information

The garden was officially opened on 6 July 2006 by popular TV comedian Jo Brand and the Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Harpinder Singh.
