Historic buildings and engineering feats

Greenwich is renowned throughout the world for its magnificent architecture. Highlights include the National Maritime Museum, the Painted Hall and Chapel of the Old Royal Naval College, the Queen’s House, and the Fan Museum.

In addition to these well-known buildings, there are other architectural gems to discover: ancient follies, perfectly-preserved historical streets, and striking examples of contemporary architecture such as the Thames Barrier or the O2 Arena.

Let the wealth and range of architecture in Greenwich take you on a tour of the borough.

Central Greenwich

At the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, The Queen's House and the magnificent Old Royal Naval College buildings frame the hill on which the Royal Observatory stands.

Other architectural attractions include St Alfege Church, which has a history that dates back to the 11th century, Trinity Hospital (the 17th century almshouse) and Greenwich Foot Tunnel.

Further down along the river is the Thames Barrier, an engineering feat hailed by some as the eighth wonder of the world. The barrier was built to stem the floods caused by tidal surges.

Blackheath

Notable for its jewellery and art collection, Ranger's House is a lovely Georgian villa built in 1723.

Charlton

Shooters Hill

Severndroog Castle is the result of a sad tale, and today it's struggling to stay in existence. Visit it before it's too late.

Eltham

A favourite Christmas getaway among royalty between the 14th and 16th centuries, Eltham Palace is today a showcase of 1930s elegance.
