Sources of information and help for parents and carers

Parents and carers who are worried about their child's learning and development should talk to the child's teacher or to the school's special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO).

There are many other sources of information, help and advice out there. Here are a few of them:

Guide for parents

The Department for Children, Schools and Families has produced a guide for parents. This contains general advice and information as well as a list of national organisations for specific special needs. You can get this booklet from your child's school, from the Greenwich SEN office or you can download it from Teachernet.

Local groups and services

A folder of information on local groups and services is available from the Children with Disabilities Team. Parents are entitled to a copy if they have a child with a statement of educational needs or a diagnosis of a disability or severe illness. The Team is based at 3, Wensley Close, Eltham, London, SE9 and you can contact them on 020 8859 2065.

Advice and help

If you want independent advice, there are several national advice services, for example the Advisory Centre for Education.

Locally, parent partnership officers offer independent advice and help to parents and carers with special needs children. They can also provide a list of national and local organisations which offer advice and help.

Greenwich Toy Library offers a range of services to help and support parents and carers of special needs children of all ages, as well as a toy lending service.
