School Action

School Action (also known as Early Years Action in a pre-school setting) involves writing an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for a child with special educational needs (SEN). This will usually be done by the child's teacher or the school's special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO).

The IEP will describe the child's needs at school, what targets s/he needs to aim for in the next term and what action the school will take to help achieve these targets. Parents and carers should be given a copy of the IEP and be involved in discussions when the plan is reviewed.

What this means for the child

Usually the resources available in the school will be used to provide some extra help. These may include support from a classroom assistant or group work with a special needs teacher.

IEP review

Any special arrangements for the child should be reviewed at least every six months. The review will consider whether the IEP is working to help the child make progress, whether it needs to carry on if good progress has been made, or whether something else is needed at School Action Plus.
