Pre-school children with SEN

The Council will usually be notified by doctors of young children with significant special educational needs (such as medical conditions or developmental problems) before the child is due to start school.

If this has not happened and parents feel their pre-school child has special educational needs (SEN), it is important to ask for advice from a professional who knows the child.

There are different procedures, depending on how severe the child's needs are:

School Action and School Action Plus

If SEN are identified in the first 21/2 years but these needs are not profound, severe or complex, they will probably be met using School Action or School Action Plus procedures in a nursery or pre-school setting.

Statutory assessment

In some cases, a referral may be made to the Greenwich Educational Psychological Service for an assessment of the child's SEN. The educational psychologist, with parental agreement, may ask for a statutory assessment, which will only be agreed if the child is considered to have severe, complex and life-long special needs.

Starting at nursery or pre-school

After children start attending nursery or pre-school, teachers there will assess and provide for the child's SEN.
