Outdoor education and school visits
Children's learning and development is greatly enhanced by outdoor education and activities, and by visits to stimulating resources and locations.
The
Widening horizons
web site gives a comprehensive overview of the outdoor education centres and services that are available to pupils at Greenwich schools.
There are also a range of environmental centres and activities — listed below — that children and young people can visit with their school. You can also visit these places independently.
The Green Chain Walk
A 64-kilometer (40-mile) signposted network of footpaths link together many of the finest open spaces in south east London.
Woodlands Garm
An 89-acre educational farm in south east London.
Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park
Former agricultural fields and marshland that have been regenerated now play host to a variety of flowers and wildlife.
Creekside Education Trust
Looking after the conservation area of Deptford Creek and providing educational information for visitors.
Thames Barrier Learning Centre
In addition to games and learning activities, the Thames Barrier Learning Centre offers comprehensive information boards on the barrier and river, a working model of the Thames Barrier and a video on its construction.
Help with costs
If you are on a low income, your child goes to a school in Greenwich and is going on a school journey, you may be able to get a grant towards the cost. For more information, look at the
school trip grants
page.
Safety concerns
If you are worried about your safety or the safety of your child visiting an outdoor centre do the following:
if it is a school visit, you can talk to the school's education visits coordinator
if it is your own visit, contact the place you are visiting, ask them about their safety procedures and who checks them
if you are not satisfied, send an email to
outdoor-education@greenwich.gov.uk
