Interview with Frederica Joseph

Book cover
Our interviewee for June is Fanalia St. Luce, the local author of a self- published novel called Amore Argoglio e Giana.

What was your favourite book as a child?

My favourite book as a child was ‘The Monkey and the Alligator’.  I enjoyed reading that book so much, I can still remember the story.

Do you remember the first book you read?

‘Alice in Wonderland’ - it triggered my imagination and in later years I enjoyed watching the story on TV.

Where do you do most of your reading?

I do most of my reading at home, whilst seated comfortably on my sofa, but on a hot day I read in the garden.

Some people have unusual habits whilst reading.  Is there anything you do while you read?

I eat sweets and fresh fruit whilst I am reading.

Which author would you most like to meet and why?

Maya Angelou, because her stories are fascinating and she speaks with such enthusiasm about her life.  I find her stories very interesting.

What sort of books do you like to read?

I have read a variety of books, however I like to read drama stories, especially the ones where the powerful baddy gets their comeuppance and the goodies rejoice in the end.

If you were washed up on a desert island, which eight books would you want to have with you?

  1. The Bible
  2. ‘I Know why the Caged Bird Sings’ by Maya Angelou
  3.  ‘Listening’ by Dave McKay
  4. ‘Scream Quietly or the Neighbours will Hear’ by Erin Pizzy
  5. ‘Baby Father’ by Patrick Augustus (a true to life story)
  6. ‘The Colour Purple’ by Alice Walker
  7. ‘Waiting to Exhale’ by Terry Macmillan
  8. ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ by Agatha Christie.

Is there one book that you couldn’t be without?

The Bible because I am a Christian and my religious beliefs are very important to me.

What was the last book you read?

Dave McKay’s fascinating book ‘Listening’.

What do you do with a book when you have finished reading it?

When I am through with a book a member of my family will usually read it afterwards.

Do you belong to a reading group?

I was part of a reading and writing group that was based in a Southwark bookshop but when I moved home I left the group.  However, recently I attended a session at Lewisham Library.

Do you buy or borrow books?

If I like the topic I prefer to buy the book but, for variety I like to borrow books from libraries.
