What happens if I don’t pay my rent?

If you are finding it difficult to make ends meet, we will help you get the advice you need. We will also check if you are entitled to other benefits.
  • If you fall into debt with your rent account, we will warn you in writing
  • If you do not clear your debt or make arrangements with us to pay it off, we will then take court action to recover the debt and you may lose your home
  • When you arrange to clear your arrears, you must keep to your agreement. If you have problems in keeping to it you must contact us to see if we can change the agreement
  • If you do not keep to your agreement, we will take you to court.
If we take you to court, you may not only lose your home but also find that the court order affects your credit rating. You will also have to pay any court costs of over £200.
