New Council homes get the go-ahead

27 November 2009

The construction of more than 30 new Council homes has been given the go-ahead by the Planning Board.

Building is due to begin in the new year and the homes are set to make an important contribution to the housing needs of local families.

Council built and managed

The homes will be the first to be directly built and managed by the Council in more than two decades. During this time, councils have been restricted by the Government’s funding rules from building new homes for rent.

Where will the homes be?

There will be 34 family homes constructed on six sites across the borough at:

  • Woodlands Park Road, Greenwich, SE10
    • 5 x 4-bed semi-detached houses
    • 1 x 5-bed semi-detached houses

  • Greenhithe Close, DA15
    • 3 x two-storey 3-bedroom houses

  • Three sites at Sewell Road, Abbey Wood, SE2
    • 5 x 5-bedroom houses
    • 7 x 4-bedroom houses
    • 3 x 3-bed houses
    • 6 x 4-bed houses

  • Combwell Crescent, Abbey Wood SE2
    • 4 x 4-bed semi-detached houses
The homes will be built to high environmental standards to help make sure that they have a low carbon footprint, this will also ensure the families who live there will enjoy lower fuel bills.

A decision on proposals to build 13 homes on two further sites was deferred to allow Planning  Board members to visit the sites.

How can I apply for the new homes?

The houses will be allocated through Greenwich Homes – the borough’s lettings service that allocates social housing.

Allocations will be made to households that meet the criteria of housing need based on family size and current overcrowding. 333 households in the borough are currently severely overcrowded.

How are the homes being funded?

The Council is receiving finance for the new homes through the Government’s £100m programme to support new Council house-building.

We have been given £4.2m through the Local Authority House Building Programme, which is being administered on behalf of the Government by the Homes and Communities Agency.

Creating job opportunities

Deputy Council Leader, Peter Brooks: "It’s excellent news that the Government is backing the Council in our desire to build more family homes for local people in housing need.

"Greenwich has a very good track record for getting new homes built for rent, and over the past few years our partnership work with local housing associations has helped to ensure hundreds of new homes have been built across the borough.

"The new Government programme, which allows councils to build homes themselves, offers a great opportunity to use local sites in the borough for the creation of family homes, and in particular to help meet the housing needs of larger families.

"It’s also an opportunity to create job opportunities for local people and we will be ensuring that our contractors work closely with Greenwich Local Labour and Business to ensure that local residents have access to work and training on these sites."
