Leaseholders

If you buy your flat or maisonette from the Council, you become a leaseholder. This means that while you own the property, the Council continues to own the Freehold.

The Council remains responsible for the maintenance of the structure and communal areas of the block and estate. Under the terms of your lease, you are required to pay service charges towards these costs and any major works contracts that are carried out.

Leaseholder handbook

The leaseholder handbook tells you all you need to know about being a leaseholder, what to do if you have problems, and how to extend your lease.

If you are a new leaseholder, you will also receive the Leaseholder Information Pack that explains your rights, responsibilities and relationship with the Council.

Forum and newsletter

Among the services the Council provides for leaseholders is the leaseholder forum. The forum gives leaseholders a chance to air their views and discuss any issues that they might have.

We also produce a regular newsletter with information and articles of interest to leaseholders.

Home Ownership Service

If you have any questions or need assistance, the Home Ownership Service provides a range of services to leaseholders and freeholders who have purchased their Council homes, or bought ex-local authority property on the open market.
