Home improvement work - partners appointed

The Government requires that all Council homes are brought up to a "decent" standard by 2010.

Since 2002, Greenwich has spent over £90million on programmes of improvements to tenants homes. We have reduced "none decency" in the borough from 83 per cent to 49 per cent. An estimated further £124m is needed to complete the job by 2010.

Partnered contractors appointed

As we move into the final phase of the Decent Homes programme, we have appointed four partner companies. They will carry out the delivery of all Decent Homes work necessary across the different areas of the borough before 2010.

The successful contractors are:

  • Apollo - Central Area
  • Direct Services - East Area
  • Mears - West Area
  • Makers - South Area.

What will happen in the last phase?

This last phase is split into two stages. The first will carry out work on around 8,000 properties between now and March 2008.

Works in this stage are due to start in the next month and surveyors and contracted staff are already:

  • carrying out surveys
  • designing kitchens and windows
  • scheduling and programming the work.

'The end is in sight'

Martin Baker, Technical Services Manager, said:

"A lot of people - tenants, members, officers - have worked very hard on this massive programme to get this far. While there is a way to go yet, the end is in sight."
