If you live in a council property and have for years, you may be able to get a discounted purchase price under the right to buy scheme.

There are also three low-cost home ownership options designed for people who cannot afford to buy a home by themselves.

  • With shared ownership, you can buy a percentage of your home and pay low rent on the rest.

  • With Homebuy, you buy three quarters and a housing association puts up the rest (to be paid back when you sell).

  • Finally, there’s the Starter Home scheme for ‘keyworkers’.
