Boundary disputes

If there is a dispute over the physical boundary between properties, you will need to seek advice over how to resolve it.

A Domestic Boundary Dispute is when there is a dispute between two or more parties over the physical boundary or boundaries between properties.

This may include disputes about the size, position or height of objects such as hedges, walls and fences.

The Council can only give advice on boundary disputes affecting Council-owned land or properties.

If you are a Council tenant

Please contact your Neighbourhood Housing office if there is a dispute over your boundary.
Find your local housing office here

If you are unsure whether the property with which you have a dispute is Council-owned, you can contact the Valuations and Estate team on 020 8921 5515.

Please note: Council rent charges are based on the size of the property, not on the size of the garden or surrounding land. This will be taken into consideration when deciding what action will be taken.

What happens next?

We will investigate the matter and decide upon the most appropriate action. This could mean that legal action is necessary.

If you are renting privately or through a housing association

The Council can not give advice on your dispute. You are advised to contact your landlord for advice on what to do next.

If you live in a privately-owned property

If the dispute is between two privately-owned properties you will need to take your own legal action. The Council can not give advice on your dispute.

You can find out who the registered owner of another property is by contacting the Land Registry.
Visit the Land Registry website.
