Coming out

There is no single way to come out as lesbian, gay or bisexual. Coming out to certain people, such as family, friends or colleagues, may be difficult and takes courage. Reactions to someone coming out can range from very positive, to less welcoming.

Coming out tips

Once you have made the decision to tell people about your sexuality, you may want to think about how you tell them.

Here are some tips:

  • Take time to feel comfortable with your own sexuality.
  • Don't be pushed into it, you'll know when the time is right for you.
  • Start by telling a friend you can be fairly certain will be supportive. This will give you confidence.
  • There are several (silly) questions you're likely to be asked: when did you know? Is it a phase you're going through? Have you got a boyfriend/girlfriend? Do you fancy me? Have you got AIDS? Make things easier by thinking through your answers in advance.
