Am I gay?

How do you really know if you're gay? During adolescence most teenagers begin to become aware of their sexual feelings and some will realise that they are gay or bisexual because they will feel different from their friends. Perhaps they will fancy someone of the same sex or feel excited or fascinated if they see gay people on TV or walking down the street.

It's important to note that almost everyone, at some point in their lives, will feel drawn to someone of their own sex, particularly when you are young.

Take time to decide

Remember, finding out what your sexual preferences are can take a while. There's no need to rush into anything, so take your time and remember that before you come out to the rest of the world you need to come out to yourself.

The first step in coming out is to tell yourself that you are gay and say, "That's OK".

Once you are sure and feel confident within your sexuality, you might want to start telling other people. Read our advice on coming out.
