FAQ
If I experience mental illness how can I get help from the Council?
The provision of care provided by Social Services is based on assessment of individual need. If you are experiencing mental health problems, it is recommended that you visit your General Practitioner (GP) first and they will refer you to Mental Health Services if they think you need specialist help.
You will be given an initial screening assessment and assigned a health worker with whom you can decide a course of action which suits your circumstances.
Your needs and results are matched against guidelines known as eligibility criteria. These criteria are used to ensure that services are provided fairly to support the people who need them most.
A wide range of services may then be made available depending on criteria and level of risk to the individual if it is deemed the individual is at critical or substantial risk.
You can also contact
NHS Direct Online
by telephoning 0845 46 47, 24 hours a day. The person answering your call will be able to give you advice and help in placing you in touch with your local mental health service.
