After a missing child is found

When a child or young person is found the Police will carry out an interview.

This includes asking the child or young person if there is a particular agency or individual they would like to talk to and telling them that an independent agency will be in touch.

Agencies undertaking the independent interviews are recognised by the Children’s Services Department.

The interview may link the child or young person with other support services such as mediation, counselling, drug and alcohol services.

Over 16s

If a child is over 16, doesn't want to return, and is not at risk, the Police may not be able to force them to come back. If the young person is officially 'looked after', the Police will discuss this situation with Children's Services, and come up with a plan of action in advance.

Looked after children

It is the responsibility of the senior manager of the children's home to ensure the child has an interview with an independent person within 72 hours of his or her return from absence.

In the case of a young person missing from foster care, the social worker should visit and see the young person within 72 hours of his or her return.
