Services and support for looked after children

We provide a range of services for children who are looked after. These include residential, adoption and fostering services, as well as specialist support to maintain and build family contact.

How do these services work?

We want to make sure that we meet the needs of children who can't live within their own families.

  • We aim to provide a safe and secure place for a child or young person to live

  • We aim to make sure there will be adults to listen and that children are safe, warm, well fed and properly clothed

  • There will be space for play and leisure

  • We will help with education as far as we are able, both supporting a child’s school place and helping a child get back into education if they have dropped out

  • We will respect parents’ and children’s wishes and aim to provide for ethnic, religious, linguistic and cultural needs, to encourage a sense of personal identity and community. This may be achieved by matching a placement to the child’s needs, or providing additional supports around ethnic, religious or cultural needs

  • We will do our best to help children and young people return to their families when this is in their best interests.

Designated nurse for looked after children

A specialist nurse works with children and young people in care. The nurse is available for informal discussion about anything that is worrying a young person and for advice on general health matters.

Education Advocate

We have a specialist teacher who helps negotiate with schools about a school place. The teacher can also offer direct help to the child and the child’s social worker if there are difficulties over school and education.
