Help for struggling parents and carers

Feeling like you can't cope? Our Children's Services teams may be able to help. Our aim is to support parents so they can continue to care for their children.

Get in touch and we will assess you and your child's needs to find the best support for your circumstances. Obviously, we need to prioritise those most in need. Services we may provide include:

  • one-to-one work with parents and children
  • group work
  • a range of projects aimed at supporting children within their families.
We may also request involvement from other departments for example, voluntary organisations or the health services.

And if we can't help, we will always try to find the right alternative.

Respite care

Sometimes all you need is a break. Particularly, if you look after a child with special needs or challenging behaviour. We can arrange to look after your child for a few hours a day or during the holidays.

Kinship care

Our preferred choice. The child lives with a member of family or friends of family for a while.

Private fostering

Of course, you could make a private arrangement for your child to be looked after by someone who is not a close relative. However, if this is for more than 28 days, you must tell us so we can check on your child's welfare.

Next steps

If none of these unofficial arrangements are possible, or an assessment has led us to believe the child may be at risk, we may need to take further action to protect your child.
