FAQ
What happens if I call the police on my violent or abusive partner?
If you are in immediate danger, a police officer should be sent to you as soon as possible. You will be offered medical help. If you have problems communicating, the police should try to arrange an interpreter. If you have been injured, the person who injured you can be arrested and taken to the police station. Even if you have not been injured, your partner could still be arrested, depending on the circumstances. The police will take immediate steps to help you stay safe.
You will be asked to make and sign a statement, which is a written account of what has happened. The police will interview the arrested person. They may be charged with a criminal offence. It is normal in this situation for the suspect to be kept in custody in order to keep you safe. They will be taken to court on the next day that it is open. The court will make a decision whether they should remain in prison until the case is heard at court. The police will keep you updated.
If you only want some advice then that can be given to you. The police may refer you to other agencies for additional help.
