Tackling domestic violence

Violence in the home, or from an ex-partner, can happen to anyone regardless of class, age, race, sexuality, religion, disability or ethnic group.

Domestic violence can include mental, emotional, sexual and physical violence - just because it doesn't show doesn't mean it doesn't matter.

You must never ignore it, as domestic violence usually gets worse over time.

Act now...

  • For 24-hour advice information and referral services contact the National Domestic Violence Helpline on 0808 2000 247. This is a freephone number with minicom and language line facilities.

  • Women's Trust Advocacy Service Greenwich provides support and safety planning. Contact them on:
    0787 624 2414 (24 hours)
    020 8316 4830

  • Greenwich Women’s Aid can be contacted on 020 8333 2352 (not 24 hours).

In an emergency…

Call the Police on 999.

During office hours you can call the Greenwich Police Community Safety Unit on 020 8284 9865. The unit offers advice and support on domestic violence, can help you through a criminal case and enforce civil injunctions.

Support organisations

There is a range of support and advice services in the borough, including help with housing, money and legal issues, that are waiting to help you.

For organisations who support victims of domestic violence, we have also produced a 'Tackling Domestic Violence Resource Pack', as well as posters and leaflets in 11  languages and training courses for workers and volunteers.

Funding for domestic violence support services

Following a funding review of domestic violence support services, the Council has begun an open-application process for funding of two services.

The services to be commissioned are:

  • An independent Domestic Violence Advocacy Service
  • Child Support provision for Refuges and Floating Support services
Applications are requested from the voluntary and community sector and funding will begin in April 2009.
