Home security

Woman checking her door locks

People over 60 are less likely to be victims of crime than any other age group, but you should still try to minimise the risks. Take a good look around your home and secure any weak points.
Check locks on doors and windows and make sure they are secure.

Reducing the risk of fire

If your concerned about fire, the fire brigade will provide a safety check of your home and fit smoke alarms free of charge.

Visit the London Fire Brigade site for details.

Bogus callers

Occassionally people may call at your home and claim to be from the Council, gas board or other organisation. Always make sure you know who people are before you let them in. Genuine callers will carry identification - ask them to show it to you through the spy hole in your door, or open it a few inches with the chain on.

Precautions

Do not keep large sums of cash at home. If you have credit cards, keep a list of their emergency numbers so that you can inform the company immediately if they are lost or stolen.
