There are a number of simple steps you can take to make your home safer.
Check your home room by room and look for any possible hazards.
- make sure that all rooms are well lit
- keep clutter of the floor and stairs
- remove trailing flexes
- nail or tape down any fraying carpets that you might trip on
- keep everyday objects and appliances in easy reach
- get gas and fire equipment checked regularly.
In the kitchen
- make sure you have space to put down hot pans
- use a timer to remind you to turn off the cooker
- wipe up spills immediately to prevent slipping.
In the bathroom
- check the temperature of bath water to avoid scalds
- use a non-slip rubber mat
- use a hand rail if you need extra support
- leave the door unlocked in case you need help.
In the bedroom
- switch off fires or electric blankets before going to bed
- make sure anything you need is within easy reach
- keep a torch by the bed.
