Accident prevention at home

Woman at home

There are a number of simple steps you can take to make your home safer.

Check your home room by room and look for any possible hazards.

  • make sure that all rooms are well lit
  • keep clutter of the floor and stairs
  • remove trailing flexes
  • nail or tape down any fraying carpets that you might trip on
  • keep everyday objects and appliances in easy reach
  • get gas and fire equipment checked regularly.

In the kitchen

  • make sure you have space to put down hot pans
  • use a timer to remind you to turn off the cooker
  • wipe up spills immediately to prevent slipping.

In the bathroom

  • check the temperature of bath water to avoid scalds
  • use a non-slip rubber mat
  • use a hand rail if you need extra support
  • leave the door unlocked in case you need help.

In the bedroom

  • switch off fires or electric blankets before going to bed
  • make sure anything you need is within easy reach
  • keep a torch by the bed.
