Genetically modified foods

Research has shown that the majority of people in the UK are against the development of genetically modified (GM) foods.

In 1999, Greenwich Council agreed to support the Local Government Association’s call for a five-year ban on the development of these foods. We have also removed them from our menus, and regular checks are carried out by Environmental Health Officers to ensure that all food served in the Council’s schools, leisure facilities and social service establishments is GM-free.

Reports and debates

For further information, please read the following Health, Environment and Public Protection Committee  (pdf 47Kb) report on genetically modified food. To view this pdf document you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader.

For information on the Genetic Modification public debate, which took place in June 2003, please see the Food Standards Agency website or the GM Public Debate.

Read the label

Food manufacturers must put information about any GM ingredients on the label. Read the rules for GM food labels.
