Location map for Woolwich Crown Court

As one of the twelve Crown Courts serving Greater London, Woolwich Crown Court has been hearing cases since it opened for business in 1993, and currently deals with more than 750 cases a year.

This is the highest court in the borough and has six courtrooms that deal with criminal cases such as theft, robbery and assaults committed from the local Greenwich Magistrates' Court. It also deals with more serious cases committed from the high security Belmarsh Magistrates' Court, as well as cases transferred from the Central Criminal Court.

Trials and appeals

Trials can last from between two days to months. The Court also hears appeals against conviction or sentence and two of the courtrooms are specially designed to accommodate high security cases.

Woolwich is one of twelve Crown Courts serving Greater London, all of which come under the London Crown Court Group of Crown Courts, part of the Court Service Agency.

Court facilities

Court facilities include consultation rooms, a prayer room, wheelchair access and first aid facilities. There is also a 'loop' induction system for those who are hard of hearing.

Jury service

Specific leaflets are available in respect of jury service and these are normally sent to you when you are summoned for service.

However, for specific questions please contact your local court (details on your summons letter) or the Jury Central Summoning Bureau (up to one week before your jury service starts) by telephone or email (see right).

Jurors are summoned for service at Woolwich from an area sweeping in an arc south of the Thames from Dartford to West Greenwich, going as far south as Sidcup and the Lewisham area.

Contact the Criminal Justice System for information on jury service on 0845 803 8003/ 020 7202 6800 or email jurysummoning@hmcourts-service.gsi.gov.uk.

Witnesses

Accommodated within the Court is the Witness Service, which provides practical and emotional support to victims and witnesses attending trials.

A pre-trial visit may be arranged by contacting the Woolwich Witness Service, which is provided by Victim Support.
Visit the Victim Support website for more on the Woolwich Witness Service

The Court aims to provide an excellent service for court users, and the staff are wholly committed to meeting their needs.
