Police Community Support Officers

All Safer Neighbourhood Teams have a dedicated Police Community Support Officer working within the team.

The officers have the following powers and responsibilities:

  • To issue fixed penalty notices (e.g. for riding on footpaths, dropping litter)
  • To confiscate alcohol in line with town centre alcohol bans
  • To confiscate tobacco from underage smokers
  • To provide a visible patrolling presence
  • To enter a property to save life and to prevent serious damage to property
  • To alert police officers via radio of any criminal activity, thus ensuring a prompt police response
  • To detain a person for up to 30 minutes pending the arrival of a police officer
  • To give support at ceremonial and special events and respond to major incidents and security alerts
  • To seize vehicles being used to cause alarm and distress
  • To demand the name and address of a person acting in an anti-social manner
  • To offer assistance and provide a ‘customer service’ relationship to the community
The PCSOs have been very well received by the community, and it is hoped that this initiative will be extended to other parts of the borough by next year.
