Can I watch CCTV?

As you would expect, the police and other enforcement agencies view CCTV more than anyone else. They use the information to catch and prosecute criminals. They must give good reasons why the data is important to a case or the prevention of crime before any recordings are released.

Individuals can ask to view any CCTV footage they appear in. See below for details.

How do I make a request?

Under data protection law, individuals have a right to see CCTV pictures if they are the subject. To make a request, you must:

  • fill out a request form
  • be clear and exact about time, date and place (within one hour of accuracy).
  • pay a £10 fee for each search
  • prove your identity

What happens next?

Once we have received the referral form and fee, it will take us a maximum of 40 calendar days to get back to you with an answer.

We will grant your request if we are satisfied with your reasons and we can make sure that showing it to you will not compromise anyone else's privacy.

The viewing will take place in a separate room - not in the main control or monitoring area.

The recording will only be played to the person who made the request.

You will only be allowed to see footage of yourself, unless all other individuals on screen have consented. We will blank out or edit the pictures to make sure no-one else can be identified.

Can I get a copy of the recording?

Only if the data protection officer is satisfied that it will not become part of a live criminal investigation, civil proceedings, or complaint and that the proper procedures will be followed.

It will be edited to make sure no-one else can be identified. There may be an additional fee.
