Helping to prevent crime

Here are some general crime prevention tips:

Cyclists

Always lock your bike to something immovable like a cycle stand or railings, ideally in a busy place, even if they are only leaving it for a matter of minutes.

Arrange your cycle so the lock is attached to the frame and one of the wheels. Use a D-shaped shackle lock for extra security.

Mobile phones and music players

Be aware of your surroundings when using the items such as mobile phones, MP3 players and iPods. Do not to use them in crowded places or in areas where you unsafe. Never leave your a phone lying on a table in a restaurant or pub.

If you own an iPod, you might want to consider using different headphones instead of the distinctive white ones that come with iPods to make it less obvious what you are carrying.

Satellite navigation systems

Satellite navigation systems have become one of the most coveted prizes for thieves. Do not leave any part of the system on display, or even in the car at all.

Hiding it in the glove compartment or under a seat is not a good idea as these are the first places a thief will look. You should also rub off the suction marks left by the holder as thieves can spot the marks.
