Eligibility for resident prices

Fees for graves, burials and memorials are lower for residents of Greenwich. This page explains the circumstances in which services can be purchased for the lower 'resident' rate.

Grave prices

To qualify for resident prices when buying a grave, any of the following must be true:

  • The purchaser is a resident in the Borough of Greenwich.
  • The purchaser is the nearest surviving relative (next of kin) of the deceased, and the deceased was a resident in the Borough of Greenwich.

Burial fees

Resident burial fees apply if any of the following are true:

  • The deceased was resident in the Borough of Greenwich at the time of death.
  • The deceased was the owner of a grave (or held 'exclusive right of burial') and was a resident when the purchase was made.
  • The deceased was a near relative (next of kin) of the owner of the grave, and the owner is a resident.
  • The deceased passed away outside the borough (such as in a nursing home or in the care of a relative) but was a resident of Greenwich for some time.

Memorial permit fees

To qualify for resident memorial permit fees, any of the following must be true:

  • The owner of the grave must be resident in Greenwich.
  • The owner of the grave lives outside the borough but was a resident at the time the grave was purchased.
  • The grave has been transferred to someone who lives outside the borough but the original owner was a resident at the time of purchase.
  • The deceased was a resident in the borough and a near relative (next of kin) of the owner of the grave who is outside Greenwich.
In all cases, the electoral roll and Council Tax records will be checked as appropriate.
