Verification

Weighbridge Checks: Testing a weighbridge
Weighing and measuring equipment that is in use for trade is regulated by law. One of the functions of Trading Standards Officers is to check that such equipment is accurate and complies with its specifications.
From a weighbridge to a petrol pump, and even down to the set of scales in the fruit shop, there are laws covering weighing and measuring devices that are used in trade.

We will check whether devices have been approved by the National Weights and Measures Laboratory, and also run tests to ensure they fall within allowable limits of error.

We offer a verification service

To arrange verification, please call 020 8921 8223 or email Trading Standards using the details on the right of the page.

Costs

Most requests for such verification relate to petrol pumps and weighbridges. Verification of four meters on a multipoint petrol dispenser costs £340. Verification of a weighbridge between 30 and 60 tonnes costs £750.

These prices attract VAT at the prevailing rate if the equipment being verified is either new or repaired. If the equipment has merely been adjusted then no VAT is payable.

European equipment

Some weighing and measuring equipment is made to a European pattern rather than a UK pattern, and in such cases it may be possible to have the verification carried out by the supplier if they are accredited to do such work.

Accountability

Of course, in addition to maintaining our own standards for use in our verification work, we in turn are periodically tested to ensure we are fair and accurate. There is a chain of traceability all the way back to UK Primary Standards.
