Alcohol

 
If you want to sell alcohol you will need to apply for a licence.

You must display a notice at your premises that shows your name and the word "licensed", followed by the purpose that the premises are licensed for.

Sale of alcohol to young people

  • It is illegal to sell, or knowingly allow any person to sell, alcohol to a person under 18.
  • It is illegal to sell liqueur chocolates to anyone under the age 16.
  • Staff under the age of 18 must not sell alcohol without knowledge of the sale by the licensee or other responsible person over 18.
  • If you are not sure the customer is 18 (alcohol) or 16 (liqueur chocolate), ask for proof of age. If no proof of age can be produced, refuse the sale.
  • It is illegal for any person to buy or attempt to buy alcohol on behalf of a person under 18.
  • It is illegal for anyone under 18 to buy or attempt to buy alcohol.
  • If you sell alcohol to a person under 18 your liquor licence may be at risk

Remember – you commit an offence if:

  • your shop does not have a licence to sell alcohol and you sell alcohol
  • you sell alcohol to a person under 18 or liqueur chocolates to a person under 16
  • a member of your staff who is under 18 sells alcohol without your knowledge or the knowledge of a person over 18.
