Alcohol
If you want to sell alcohol you will need to apply for a
licence
.
You must display a notice at your premises that shows your name and the word "licensed", followed by the purpose that the premises are licensed for.
Sale of alcohol to young people
It is illegal to sell, or knowingly allow any person to sell, alcohol to a person under 18.
It is illegal to sell liqueur chocolates to anyone under the age 16.
Staff under the age of 18 must not sell alcohol without knowledge of the sale by the licensee or other responsible person over 18.
If you are not sure the customer is 18 (alcohol) or 16 (liqueur chocolate), ask for proof of age. If no proof of age can be produced, refuse the sale.
It is illegal for any person to buy or attempt to buy alcohol on behalf of a person under 18.
It is illegal for anyone under 18 to buy or attempt to buy alcohol.
If you sell alcohol to a person under 18 your liquor licence may be at risk
Remember – you commit an offence if:
your shop does not have a licence to sell alcohol and you sell alcohol
you sell alcohol to a person under 18 or liqueur chocolates to a person under 16
a member of your staff who is under 18 sells alcohol without your knowledge or the knowledge of a person over 18.
