Social enterprise

A social enterprise is a democratically owned and controlled business with social as well as economic aims. This is sometimes known as the 'third sector'.

There are many models to meet a range of circumstances, including:

  • worker co-operatives
  • employee share ownership
  • community businesses
  • credit unions
  • social firms.
The Council funds or part-funds the following local initiatives to provide advice and support to social enterprise:

Greenwich Credit Union - formerly Timeline Credit Union

Established in 1998, this is a financial co-operative monitored and regulated by the Financial Services Authority. Greenwich Credit Union services include saving schemes and cheap loans.
