Does my child need a licence?

There is a range of different factors that determine whether a child (under 16) needs a licence or not. We can summarise as follows:

  • If the child is going to be paid for their work, they need a licence.

  • If the child is not going to be paid, but will miss school, they need a licence.

  • If a child is not going to be paid, and will NOT miss any school, they only need a licence if they work more than five days.
Working out if the child will need a medical is slightly more complicated. For a full list of factors including the medical, see the stage licence decision table.
