What's it for?

A Personal Licence allows the holder to sell alcohol at any location in England and Wales. It applies only to the sale of alcohol, and it is valid for ten years.

However ..

This Licence does not allow alcohol to be sold at a venue where a Premises Licence or Temporary Event Notice is not in force.  Your Personal Licence is an addition to these requirements, not a substitute.

A Personal Licence belongs to the holder, not to particular premises. Therefore you must apply for your Personal Licence to the Council where you live.

You do not need a Personal Licence if ...

The premises are a qualifying member’s club or are operating under a Temporary Event Notice.

Why do you need a Personal Licence?

  • All sales of alcohol must be made by, or under the authority of, a Personal Licence holder. (Not everyone who makes a sale has to hold a Personal Licence, so long as a Personal Licence holder has authorised the sale.)
  • You can have as many Personal Licence Holders on the premises as you wish, providing there is only one Designated Premises Supervisor.

Temporary Event Notices (TENs)

You can also choose to become a Personal Licence Holder if you wish to apply for more than five Temporary Event Notices (TENs) a year.
