Students' guide to filming in Greenwich

Film Unit coloured stripe

Students wishing to film in Greenwich borough may send details of their enquiry to filmofficer@greenwich.gov.uk

A Film Officer will assess your request, advise you accordingly and if necessary ask you to fill out the filming application form. Note that this does not constitute a filming licence.

Before permission is granted, a copy of your college or university public liability insurance must be submitted. The minimum cover requirement is £5 million.

If permission is granted and a licence is issued, you would be agreeing to provide Greenwich Film Unit with a copy of the production and an end credit.

Charges

Greenwich Film Unit will try to waive location and licence administration fees, where possible. However,  a fee will be applicable if, for example:

  • the filming location is a chargeable space
  • members of staff are required on site
  • the filming is of a complex nature.
If your location search is for a residential property, a shop or a restaurant, we advise that you speak to family and friends first. This is because there is generally a fee when filming at such locations.

Notice periods

A minimum notice period of five working days is required for all student requests.

Filming that involves special effects, or is considered to be of a complex nature, will require a longer lead-in time.

In essence, we would advise you to submit all requests with as much notice as possible to enable the Film Unit to facilitate your filming.

Filming near residents or businesses

If filming is to take place near to residents or businesses it may be necessary to consult with neighbouring properties.

This is to ensure that all parties are aware of the proposed filming activity, including parking arrangements for technical vehicles.

You can announce your filming intentions by letter. All such letters are to be submitted to the Film Unit for approval prior to a letter drop.

You may find our residents' letter template useful:

Risk assessment and special effects

Before we can issue a licence, you will need to submit a risk assessment or method statement before we can issue a licence if:

  • filming involves special effects
  • or filming is to take place where a risk assessment is required.
You may use our risk assessment template:
