Sustainable issues relating to procurement

The National Procurement Strategy for Local Government 2003 says that procurement should be used to help deliver corporate objectives such as the economic, social and environmental (sustainability) objectives of the community plan and that every Council should build sustainability into its procurement strategy, processes and contracts.

EU leader

The government has set a challenging target for the UK to be an EU leader in sustainable procurement by 2009. The government's Procuring the Future action plan includes a recommendation that all public sector organisations must reach by December 2009.

We have adopted a Draft Environmentally and Socially Responsible Procurement Policy to address the key themes of the National Strategy and the recommendation from the Government Sustainable Task force.
